Interview with SuperSauce Audio

  1. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  2. A: Can I get it fast? Yes, possibly. Let us know if you have tight deadlines and we may be able to accommodate you.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Mixing music for a couple of indie films, but since we are under NDA we cannot share details.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Both are great, but primarily digital for the versatility, control and recall.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: We will work with you until you are happy with the results.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: It's music!

  11. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  12. A: Tell us about your music, what are you looking for in the mix? Are you referencing any other tracks? If so, what is it about them that you like the most? Does your project have specific group stem needs?

  13. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  14. A: Since it is a desert island there is no power, or communications. Food, water, a lighter, a large battery, and a satellite phone -- so we can call for help, get rescued, and return to working on audio. Yes, we are logical engineer types in this case. :-)

  15. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  16. A: An artist like You! We enjoy working with new people, whether beginner or experienced, and seeing the wide range of talent that is out there.

  17. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  18. A: The biggest factor in the final sound is the track quality, both in terms of recorded sound and performance. We have been known to make "less than ideal" recordings sound good, but the adage "get it right at the source" holds true. So, take the time up front to capture the best possible sound.

  19. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  20. A: We are very good with details. As multi-discipline engineers we understand audio, electronics, and DSP programming and use that insight daily.

  21. Q: What's your typical work process?

  22. A: We start with communication to understand the client's desires and requirements. Next is project organization and reviewing tracks for problems that should be fixed before mixing begins. Next we will work on a first-draft mix, and usually try to get feedback from the client to be sure we are heading in the right direction. At this point there may be some number of iterations to achieve the client's vision. We realize that getting it just right can take multiple steps and this is why we do not have a fixed number of revisions. Finally, we deliver a polished result that the client is happy with. Often with film cues the process gets easier after the first cue is finished. As we learn what the client is looking for the remaining cues usually move along faster.

  23. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  24. A: John Williams, Hans Zimmer, Ennio Morricone, Max Steiner.

  25. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  26. A: Mixing and mastering music cues for film/video/podcast to bring out the full potential of a composer's work. We also mix songs and do occasional track cleanup to make a problem recording usable.
