Rotem is a great composer, with impressive tech capabilities that demonstrate his skills in this modern and competitive world of film music. I had the pleasure of having Rotem as my student and to say that I was impressed with him is an understatement. Not only did he compete his composing assignment ahead of all his peers, he was also the one to help everybody else with theirs, lending his knowledge to assist others. Rotem was also the one who ran the student concert, dealing with all tech issues while performing his own wonderful music. Rotem would be a true asset to every project!

Interview with Rotem Davidesko

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I'm really proud of my instrumental demo track "Kanashimi" which won 1st prize in an international film scoring competition in Italy. Having my work recognized by legendary composer Sharon Farber was such an honor. As both the writer and producer, this cinematic piece represents my growth and abilities in the world of film and media scoring.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I'm currently producing two debut EPs for two incredibly talented up-and-coming singers. I also have an exciting short film project as well as a video game in the works that I'll be scoring. Lots of diverse, creative endeavors in progress!

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Definitely check out Ofer Tiberin @ Momek and Mor Tadmor @ M.T Studio. I've collaborated with each of them on projects and they are consummate professionals with top-notch production skills.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: I believe the best approach is utilizing both analog and digital tools. Analog equipment like quality preamps and compressors add unmatched warmth and character. But the flexibility, convenience and precision of digital software and recording can't be beat. By blending analog tone-shaping with digital editing and mixing, I can achieve the highest fidelity and craft a dynamic, commercial-grade production.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: My promise is to be fully invested in serving the music and realizing the client's vision. I guarantee an enjoyable, smooth production process through transparent communication, meeting deadlines, and maintaining flexibility. Most importantly, I promise to deliver professional, radio-ready results that elevate the song to its highest creative potential.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: What I enjoy most is beginning that journey with an artist into the unknown possibilities of a new project. I love collaborating to expand on a basic idea into a professional, fully-realized work. Being able to make a living bringing creative visions to life is extremely fulfilling.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Clients often ask how I can best add value to their song or how many revisions are included. My answer is that I'm here to take their project to the next level however I can, whether that involves production, arrangement, mixing, instrumentation, or often all of the above! I'm flexible on revisions and my top priority is achieving their ideal finished product, period.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: The biggest misconception is that the producer's job is to impose their own style onto an artist or song. In reality, my role is to serve the music and help articulate the client's artistic identity, not my own. I'm here to amplify their vision, not override it. Each project requires a unique approach based solely on the needs of the client and their creation.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: To kick off any new project, I always want to understand the client's goals, vision and overall expectations. What mood/emotion are we trying to convey? Are there any songs/artists that serve as references? What elements do we want to change or improve from any existing demos? Discussing logistics like budget and deadlines is also crucial. My aim is to get inside their creative headspace.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: I would advise clients to seek out a producer who excels not just technically, but also in working collaboratively to achieve the artist's creative vision. Communication and chemistry are so important. Listen to their samples and reach out for a consultation to get a feel for their approach. Hire someone passionate who will be fully invested in realizing the potential of your project.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Macbook Pro, UAD Volt, Neumann U87, Gibson ES 335, Taylor C-214.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I've been a professional musician for over 13 years now. I started out teaching and performing before transitioning into studio production and composition work. I now balance my time between working with talented artists of all kinds and scoring for visual media projects. It's been an amazing experience growing in my craft and diversifying my musical talents over the past decade-plus.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: My musical style is very dynamic - I aim to create sonic landscapes that tell compelling stories and take listeners on a journey. I draw inspiration from many genres, so my approach is quite eclectic. Above all, I strive to make music that feels genuine and connects on an emotional level. The human experience serves as my creative muse.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I'd love to collaborate with innovative guitarist Cory Wong. His style of playing melodically in a rhythmic, quasi-improvisational way truly inspires me. And his compositions are so well crafted yet retain a natural, organic feel. I appreciate his funk/jazz fusion approach and would enjoy teaming up on a track.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: When recording ensemble instruments like strings or horns, I've found that tracking each part 3 times and layering creates a richer, more polished sound. I'll then add subtle reverb and chorus effects to make the instruments sound wider and more vibrant in the mix.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I specialize in film and media scoring, drawing on my classical training to create evocative, cinematic soundscapes. I also produce music for indie artists across genres like electronic, pop, rock, and more. My versatility allows me to excel in serving a wide spectrum of client's musical styles and needs.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill is undoubtedly my ability to communicate. I strive to make the production process enjoyable through transparent collaboration with artists. Being receptive to feedback and articulating musical concepts clearly is critical. I feel this collaborative approach is key to bringing out the best results creatively.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring over a decade of experience as a musician and producer. My strengths in arrangement, musicianship, and mixing breathe new life into a song. I also have strong communication skills and immerse myself fully in understanding what the artist is trying to achieve. This allows me to take their vision and transform it into a professional, radio-ready production through my expertise.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: My production process always starts with an in-depth consultation with the client to understand their vision, goals, and direction for the project. From there, I develop a comprehensive plan covering details like budget, timeline, arrangements, and milestones. Maintaining open communication and meeting deadlines are key throughout the process. I provide regular progress updates and flexibility for revisions to ensure the client is completely satisfied.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: My home studio is equipped with a premium selection of guitars, microphones, plugins, and other gear that allows me to record and produce music at the highest quality. I utilize acoustic treatment and take an intentional approach to physical layout and signal flow. I'm constantly learning about new techniques and upgrading my audio components and software to maintain a professional, versatile studio environment.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: For film composition, I'm heavily inspired by the likes of legendary figures like Hans Zimmer, John Williams, and Michael Giacchino who have mastered the art of storytelling through music. On the production side, I'm influenced by icons like Quincy Jones, Mark Ronson, and Charlie Puth who all bring a signature polish and style to any song or album they work on. I also admire innovative guitarists like Cory Wong who blur the lines between composition and improvisation.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: As a versatile producer and composer, I specialize in both professional music production and emotive film/media scoring. I've had the pleasure of working with a diverse array of talented artists to help bring their musical visions to life through skilled mixing, arrangement, and instrumentation. More recently, I've been pursuing my passion for visual media composition. I'm currently working on a variety of exciting film, trailer, and video game scoring projects where I create impactful, cinematic soundscapes tailored seamlessly to the visual narratives.
