Rob has mixed in excess of 30 tracks for me so far. Great ear and has helped me find and develop my sound. He has always gone above and beyond to provide me with better knowledge also. I can't imagine working with anyone else at this point.

Interview with Rob Cavill

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I assisted for Jonny Douglas in producing a George Michael album,

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Showreel tracks and an album of electronic instrumental music from my long time client.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: not yet but hope to change that when I get accepted!

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both because I still love the feel of faders and knobs and I love the speed, accuracy and creativity of digital.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: That I will deliver a mix.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Getting a track that someone has worked hard on and put their soul into so that I can hear it in the raw recording and bring out the best aspects

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Can you do an .mp3 version, and yes of course I can.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That I'm a mind reader!

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: Influences/thought process about what they want the track to end up like.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Be honest about your project. If you need help or think some things might not be right about the track, just ask. I will do the same if I hear something that I think could work great or equally something which I think might be better changed.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: My Speakers, headphones, acoustic guitar, laptop - did it in 4!

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I started properly in music production when studying at LIPA Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts), this got me access to the top equipment and work processes of professionals, then headed to London at worked at SARM studios where it was very much back to basics apprenticeship style. Since then I've been lecturing music production and starting my new studio enterprise which I'm very excited about.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: I don't have a mixing style as its dependent upon what is presented to me in the tracks, more generally I'm a friendly guy who always wants the best outcome for the artist

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I'd love to work with Nothing But Thieves as they produce very interesting work but equally would love to get to mix a 1975 record for the cool synth arrangements!

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Having light and shade to your arrangements, don't go gung ho! throughout the whole song, music is supposed to breathe and have times where there is relative quiet to make the important parts jump out more.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Synth pop and Rock.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Making sure that the track presents itself in a musically appropriate way and has impact.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring musicality in dynamics and use of fx where it is needed. I can bring years of production experience to the project and suggest arrangement ideas if the client is accepting.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I will split my workflow into three sections, firstly balancing and getting a feel for the song I'm mixing. Listening to references, a rough mix if available and listening for key elements within the production. The next stage is making my mix unique with tailored fx and automation. The final stage is for overall presentation ensuring the mix stands out in its uniqueness.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I have invested circa £45,000 in a purpose built studio where all my work is done. I have extremely accurate 3 way monitors which allow me to hear down to 30 Hz and they are room calibrated with IK ARC studio. I use SSL UC1 and Avid Artist Mix along with my Neumann MT48 for hands on fader mixing and the highest quality AD/DA conversion alongside an SSL Alphalink and RME Madiface. Also use Slate VSX.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Big fan of Trevor Horn productions but I love any production with interesting melodic and harmonic work.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: The most common type of work is mixing. I love mixing different styles and making them sound as good as they can be.
