Mario Hann

Producer, Songwriter, Musician

Mario Hann on SoundBetter

Producer/songwriter and audio engineer from Germany

I typically work as a producer and songwriter from our location in Cologne and at my home near Basel, Switzerland. I get as involved in songwriting and arrangement as the artist/band wants, and this can include anything from co-writing, scheduling, booking; to letting the artist run free while focusing strictly on the engineering aspect of the session.

Do you have a vision?

Interview with Mario Hann

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Firtan - Niedergang I produced, engineered and mixed the whole album. It makes me happy to have had a part in assembling something this colossal and complex and it sounding so unique and unlike any metal band out there. It took blood sweat and tears but I'm very proud of the outcome.

  3. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  4. A: Just write me and we'll figure something out!

  5. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  6. A: Be agressive.

  7. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  8. A: Encyclopedic knowledge of pop music production tropes. Haha.

  9. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  10. A: An impactful sense of purpose.

  11. Q: What's your typical work process?

  12. A: First comes the working out of timeframe, budget and purpose of the project. Second is assembling the material by recording, compiling or creating it from scratch. Third comes the refining of the material, ensuring it can fulfill its purpose.

  13. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  14. A: We use a 2015 iMac and a 2012 Macbook Pro Retina running Cubase 7 and Pro Tools 10. For monitoring we use either JBL 305, Yamaha HS80m or Monkey Banana Turbo4 speakers hooked up to Focusrite Liquid Saffire 56 and Scarlett 18i20 Interfaces. For especially quiet sources we utilize a Joe Meek SixQ preamp.

  15. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  16. A: I am inspired by everyone I work with.

  17. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  18. A: I have been mostly producing and recording eps and albums in the last few years. When desired by the client, my process can get quite hands-on, with me playing multiple instruments, singing, writing orchestral arrangements or just taking care of scheduling and communication between the client and mixing/mastering engineers.

  19. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  20. A: Full commitment to their vision.

  21. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  22. A: I wrote some music to accompany a regional theatre play. I am also working on an album with Luxemburg rapper Mystical Mysh, a singer-songwriter ep, a black metal ep, a German pop song and a new single for the punkrockers of First Spring.

  23. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  24. A: Jordon Popp. The man is an editing wizard. Outstanding quality and service!
