Interview with Selcuk Torun

  1. Q: How would you describe your style?

  2. A: Cinematic. Telling and supporting a story through music which can´t be told by the picture.

  3. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  4. A: I composed a huge scripted multimedia show (60 min.) for a large company in China. The budget was scary and incredibly high. I have collaborated with dozens of international artists there. It was a challenge in every way, but we did it! There were many other projects that I am proud of. But I am most proud of the wonderful people I was able to work with and get to know.

  5. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  6. A: A sequel to a famous image film about a fruit stand owner. Very emotional!

  7. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  8. A: Not yet.

  9. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  10. A: Best of both worlds.

  11. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  12. A: Whatever needs to be done. I´ll fix it!

  13. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  14. A: Hearing how something good is being developed and I get the feeling that it is the right path. Also the exchange and inspiration with creative professionals.

  15. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  16. A: It's like buying a car. I don’t know what you want. A luxury car or just something that gets you from A to B?

  17. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  18. A: Time expenditure and intellectual demands that are underestimated.

  19. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  20. A: Do you drink and what´s your favorit food? Which films do you love?

  21. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  22. A: No need to explain your concerns to me musically. With colors, pace, emotions and energy I understand your concerns much better instead of Bm7/13.

  23. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  24. A: My grand piano. Should be enough. And a cell phone, so somebody can pick me up from this damn island! How did I even get here?

  25. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  26. A: I´m a professional composer since 1998. My career started with a main theme for a famous tv show, which is still on air after 25 years.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Hans Zimmer. Actually I know him. For me he is the master of story telling.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Hire people who are better than you! e.g. mixing engineer. Listen carefully to your client!

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Cinematic music. Which can be everything nowadays from pop to classic.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Reliability and story telling through music.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: Emotion, quality and meaning.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: First: Conversation with the director, agency, creative directors or producers. Talking about the story, requirement and budget. And than get the job done.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I have a big studio with a big control room, mixing console, grand piano, guitars etc. A recording room with best microphones and a comfy coffee machine in the lounge, the George Clooney edition, if you know what I mean ;o)

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I have a few classical heros like Bach, Mozart and Schubert. But my "modern" heros are Hans Zimmer, Thomas Newman, Rachel Portman and a dozen more film composers from all around the world

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Composing to picture.
