Interview with Heiko Mürkens

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Around 2010, I wrote and produced the first German-language heavy metal musical. I worked on it for 4 years and won a few awards at the end. That was a big milestone for me.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: New songs for pop and folk artists to be released later this year. Own material under my pseudonym "Kauznberg". Radio commercial.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Both. Because I love the possibilities of both worlds.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: We will bring your project to an awsome end.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: I love it when customers are happy about unexpected ideas and suggestions that they hadn't thought of before.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: The questions are very different. But none of them remain unanswered.

  13. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  14. A: What is your musical goal? What do you want to achieve with the song? By when does the project have to be finished?

  15. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  16. A: Be ready for creative work that needs to be brought to a cool result in a timely manner. No song will be published if you work on it forever and don't finish it.

  17. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  18. A: Since there would be no electricity on a desert island: the Polyend Tracker mini, Roland JU-06a, Roland JX-08 and a solar-powered solar charging module to charge the batteries of the devices...

  19. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  20. A: Music and sound engineering have been with me my whole life. I have worked as a sound engineer in theaters and musicals, studied sound engineering, set up my own recording studio and have been active as a live and studio musician for 40 years.

  21. Q: How would you describe your style?

  22. A: Define as few boundaries as possible and produce creative results.

  23. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  24. A: Vibe before work... ;-)

  25. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  26. A: Pop, electronic and folk music, sound design, experimental music, avant-garde music.

  27. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  28. A: Arrangement and creative sounds, relaxed working and maintaining a good mood in a project.

  29. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  30. A: If desired, I can realize a production completely on my own according to the customer's rough idea. If there are specific ideas, I will of course fulfill them as requested.

  31. Q: What's your typical work process?

  32. A: There is no standardized way for me. I look at the client's idea and what a song needs and think of a way to implement this creatively and, if possible, with an individual touch for the project. It's the same with the recording process.

  33. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  34. A: My studio consists of a hybrid setup. I have the option of recording using classic recording equipment and tube technology, or purely digitally. I can move flexibly between the analog and digital worlds. Just as the project requires.

  35. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  36. A: Musically speaking, I'm more of a chameleon. I love listening to songs analytically and understanding what happens in them in order to incorporate or expand these insights into my work process. It doesn't matter to me whether I'm listening to a classical work, a modern pop production or an avant-garde noise collage.

  37. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  38. A: I receive many requests to create a complete musical arrangement from a "vocals and guitar" template, for example. This often relates to pop and folk music or sound design. My clients love that I always manage to add unique elements to each artist and each song.
