Interview with Michèl Vedère

  1. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  2. A: For more than two decades, music has been my life, bouncing around different bands and studying Audio Engineering roughly ten years back. From 2022, I've been honing my craft as a professional songwriter, and I branched out into music production in 2023. Let me be straight with you, I'm still in the midst of building my catalog and broadening my portfolio. However, I've had the incredible opportunity to collaborate with a slew of highly successful songwriters and producers who've become my mentors. They've taught me the ins and outs of crafting not just average tunes, but chart-topping hits.

  3. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  4. A: Even the most impressive production can't elevate a poor song.

  5. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  6. A: I'm currently guiding a few up-and-coming artists, helping them discover their unique sound and style. At the same time, I'm focusing on building a solid catalogue aimed at sync opportunities, collaborating closely with music supervisors.

  7. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  8. A: - What kind of music inspires you and what are your influences and references? - What's on your Wishlist for the song and what are your no-gos? - What is the deadline for this project?

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I won't call any project complete until you're totally, 100% satisfied. This means if something isn't hitting the mark or you're feeling like it's not quite there yet, I'm on it. I'm committed to going back to the drawing board, tweaking, adjusting, and refining, as many times as it serves the project. If we're running in circles I'll be completely honest with you and try to get us back on track. Because at the end of the day, if you're not happy with the final result, then my job isn't done.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Watching the genuine joy on artists' faces when their music is released is truly special to me. And hearing the crowd sing along to their songs live for the first time? As one of my mentors once said: "Those are the highs you can't buy."

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: I'm not your typical 'work for hire' guy. I'm looking for clients who share my passion for music, who are as enthusiastic about their craft as I am. I'm not here for generic stuff—I want to dive into something special with you.

  15. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  16. A: 1. My favourite Co-Writer 2. My smartphone (to get off that island hopefully but also to record every single idea :P) 3. My acoustic Guitar (for playing Wonderwall around the bonfire) 4. Sunscreen 5. Ear plugs ('cause I'm a very light sleeper)

  17. Q: How would you describe your style?

  18. A: I don't want to fit myself into a box. I'm embracing creativity without limitations. The artist's needs and the song's authenticity will always guide my work.

  19. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  20. A: Most of the time I'm all about Pop music, but growing up with a dad who's crazy about Rock tunes, I've also got a thing for heavier and edgier sounds. I'm always down to break out of the Pop bubble and dive into something a bit more intense and wild. But I've got a soft spot for sincere singer-songwriter pieces with an authentic sonic atmosphere.

  21. Q: What's your typical work process?

  22. A: I start by chatting with the client to catch the vibe and vision for the song. Depending on where they're at, we either jump into a songwriting / rewriting session or dive straight into production. I dig into the reference tracks to nail down the sound they're after. After I've created the first draft, we tweak and refine until it's spot-on. If they're able to provide vocals themselves, perfect! If they can't do vocals, no worries—I got them covered and we record them remotely. Need session singers or musicians? I can handle that too. Once they're stoked with the production, we give it to mix and mastering. They walk away with all the tracks they might need for sync, remixes or backing tracks!

  23. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  24. A: Ryan Tedder, Jack Antonoff, FINNEAS, Serban Ghenea, Max Martin, Mark Ronson, Taylor Swift, Greg Wells
