Pop Songwriter, Studio Singer

Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

A: In the Autumn of 2025 I lead a six week songwriting course for 9 and 10 year olds at a primary school in Leicester, UK. By the end of the course, we had written a full original song, and my recording engineer came in to record the kids singing it. We released it, and it's a wonderful Christmas song called The Greatest Gift, featuring over 30 children singing throughout! That project was utterly wonderful and such a special experience for me, and I am so so proud of the end result, but also of the fact that I was able to inspire and educate these children on just how much fun it can be to write music!!

Q: What are you working on at the moment?

A: I'm writing towards my fourth EP, which centres around themes of big life changes, relocation and starting a brand new life! All things I've experienced over that last six months.

Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

A: Not yet, but I'm hoping to learn about the amazing community here and make some friends!

Q: Analog or digital and why?

A: I love both! But probably analog, nothing beats that human feel!

Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

A: That they will get something melodic, catchy and unique in some way.

Q: What do you like most about your job?

A: Writing something out of nothing! Hearing an idea come from absolute thin air, and getting that idea to a fully fleshed out track is the most addictive, rewarding thing.

Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

A: Something to do with how much time it takes to write songs, to which I answer - it varies! But if the song needs writing, it can be done in a day or two.

Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

A: That writing commercial music is easy. I believe it's the HARDEST style of music to do well, as it's massively over-crowded already, and there are a million different things that can constitute 'commercial'.

Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

A: Who was the first artist you remember being inspired by? I want to understand how the other person hears music, and where their music taste all began. That tells you so much about a person's musical inclinations.

Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A: I think everyone has different skillsets, and it's our biggest strength to be able to collaborate. I'm not a fan of the mindset some people have to accomplish every aspect of their project alone. Even if you can write, record, mix, design the art, etc.... I always believe you will have a more exciting project if you work with others! So I'd love to be involved in other people's journeys to hopefully help them achieve something more exciting, but also to witness that amazing part of their journey and be a part of it! What an honour that would be!

Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

A: An acoustic guitar, an upright piano, some sort of vocal recording device... I'm not a gear guy, I'm far more interested in being able to WRITE songs!!

Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

A: I started writing songs purely for fun when I was 17, because all my friends were into heavy rock, and I wanted to show them how great pop music was! Now, I'm 25, I work full-time teaching music, and my dream is to reach a stage where I make my entire income from writing music... either for myself or others!

Q: How would you describe your style?

A: Piano-driven, a lot like Keane. Big on vocal melodies, like Gary Barlow. And emotionally relatable like Coldplay.

Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

A: Gary Barlow is outright top of my list. From a very young age I remember hearing his melodies and noticing something very special. To consistently write music in the style that he does is one of the hardest things to do in music, and he's my all-time hero for that.

Q: Can you share one music production tip?

A: Don't overthink it. I'm a songwriter before I'm a producer, and I strongly believe a GREAT song doesn't need pristine production - in fact, sometimes lower production value is what gives it so much character! I often think back to early Coldplay, or The Strokes - it's laden with 'imperfections', but that's exactly why we fell in love with those bands in their early days! That IS their charm!

Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

A: Commercial pop, singer/songwriter, folk, indie...

Q: What's your strongest skill?

A: Marrying melody and lyrics together. It's tough to consistently write great lyrics, or great melodies, but when you do, it's so crucial to match them up suitably. That's the skill I believe I've honed over years of writing hundreds of songs.

Q: What do you bring to a song?

A: A deep understanding of what works in commercial pop music, but also what elements of a song are most likely to resonate with the listener, and potentially forge a life-long fan from the first listen.

Q: What's your typical work process?

A: I like to write at the piano, usually tinkering until a melody or a chord progression sticks! From there, I will feel what vibe the lyrics should have in order to match, and start to brainstorm. I like it to be a very free flowing experience, but I'm also not afraid to grind through creative block to get projects completed! You can't edit a blank page, that's what I always remind myself!

Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

A: I record demo material for myself in a home studio with low-medium quality equipment, but have all of my work mixed and mastered by a professional in his studio in London.

A: Gary Barlow, Coldplay, Keane, The Beatles, Tom Odell, Pet Shop Boys

Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

A: I provide fully written pop songs, to meet specific needs of a client. I also give feedback and aid in improving melodies and lyrics which a client has already written.
