Interview with Oleksii Donets

  1. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  2. A: I promise to deliver music that not only meets your needs — but elevates your story. I treat every project with full creative focus, aiming to craft emotionally powerful, memorable sound. I’m committed to clear communication, timely delivery, and making sure the final result resonates with your vision.

  3. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  4. A: I ask clients about the emotional tone, narrative context, and purpose of the music. Some key questions I usually ask include: – What emotions should the music evoke? – Are there any musical references or temp tracks you like? – What’s the role of music in this scene or project — foreground or background? – What’s your deadline, and do you need stems or alternate versions? These questions help me understand both the creative vision and technical needs, so I can deliver something that truly fits.

  5. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  6. A: I started making music over 7 years ago as part of a dark electronic project, and over time I gravitated toward composing for visual media. My background in performance and sound design naturally led me to scoring — where I could combine emotion, atmosphere, and storytelling. Since then, I’ve been focused on creating music for film, games, and trailers, always exploring new ways to shape sound and feeling.

  7. Q: How would you describe your style?

  8. A: My style is dark, emotional, and immersive — a blend of cinematic tension, industrial edge, and haunting atmosphere. I focus on creating soundscapes that feel alive, unsettling, and deeply connected to the subconscious. Whether it’s slow-burning dread or chaotic energy, my music is designed to stay with the listener long after it ends.

  9. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  10. A: Focus on emotion before perfection. A raw, imperfect sound that conveys feeling will always connect more deeply than a polished track that says nothing. Don’t be afraid to leave in texture, space, or even noise — if it serves the story, it belongs in the mix.

  11. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  12. A: I usually work on dark, cinematic music for film, video games, and trailers. This includes genres like ambient, industrial, electronic, and experimental — often blending analog synths, eerie textures, and haunting melodies to create emotionally intense soundscapes.

  13. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  14. A: My strongest skill is creating immersive, emotionally-driven music that tells a story on its own. I specialize in crafting dark atmospheres and tension-filled soundscapes that heighten the emotional impact of a scene or gameplay moment. Whether it’s subtle psychological suspense or overwhelming intensity, I know how to translate feeling into sound.

  15. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  16. A: I bring emotional depth, atmosphere, and a strong sense of narrative. My focus is always on creating music that doesn't just support the visuals — it enhances them, adds tension, or reveals what's hidden beneath the surface. I use a mix of analog synths, textured sound design, and haunting melodies to give each piece its own identity and emotional weight.

  17. Q: What's your typical work process?

  18. A: I start by understanding the emotional tone and narrative goals of the project. From there, I usually sketch out a few thematic ideas — either with piano, analog synths, or atmospheric textures — depending on the direction. Once the core mood is established, I build out the full arrangement, layering sound design, rhythm, and dynamics. I keep close communication with the client throughout, offering drafts and revisions to ensure the music aligns with their vision. Final delivery includes a polished mix and, if needed, stems or alternate versions.

  19. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  20. A: My studio is a hybrid setup combining analog gear with modern digital tools. I use analog synthesizers like the Moog, Sequential Pro-One, Korg MS-20, and Roland Gaia 2 to craft rich, character-driven textures. I also incorporate a Fender Telecaster guitar for more organic, expressive layers. This blend allows me to create a wide range of moods — from dark and cinematic to raw and experimental.

  21. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  22. A: I'm deeply inspired by Trent Reznor and Akira Yamaoka. Reznor’s ability to blend raw emotion with industrial sound design has had a huge impact on my approach to texture and atmosphere. Yamaoka’s work, especially on the Silent Hill series, showed me how music can shape psychological tension and immerse the listener in an unsettling yet beautiful world. Both artists have taught me that sound can be as narratively powerful as visuals.

  23. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  24. A: I primarily compose original music for film, video games, and trailers — often with a dark, emotional, and cinematic tone. Clients usually come to me for immersive soundscapes, haunting themes, and intense atmospheres that elevate the mood and narrative of their project. I also handle full production, from initial concept to final mix.
