Nate Lanzino

Producer/ Composer/ Engineer

Nate Lanzino on SoundBetter

Hi I'm Nate and I help songwriters, musicians, directors, producers etc bring their vision to life. While music is extremely subjective and every project’s needs are unique, I pride myself on being able to adapt to any scenario you throw at me. I'm also very responsive so feel free to inquire!

ABOUT ME:
I'm a producer/ engineer and multi instrumentalist composer based out of Baltimore and I'm all about making the best possible music! I work quick and do my best to make my clients happy while staying within their budget. I have 14 years of experience and over 25 million streams across all platforms.

I began my professional journey into music production in 2011. I learned to hone my production and engineering skills during a mentorship program at Wrightway Studios (Baltimore, MD) before going on to build my own home studio as well as co-own Song Builder Studios in Catonsville, MD. I now work out of Wrightway as one of the main producers/ engineers. I've composed and arranged for short films and trailers that have appeared on Amazon, TubiTV and various film festivals.

Being a seasoned producer with diverse taste varying from bluegrass to R&B to pop to metal and everything in between, I'm attuned to the unique voice each artist has and how best to bring their vision to life. My clients agree my diverse skill set, attention to detail, and passion for music make me an asset on any project.

Interview with Nate Lanzino

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Megagonefree's catalogue. I'm super proud of the work we did because it was entirely organic and managed to connect with a pretty huge audience. We met when she was maybe 17, did one day in the studio and that song got over 300,00 streams. From there we were able to make so many fun and unique songs that really stand out from a lot of pop music.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Just wrapped up a 12 song EDM project I'm pretty excited about, some singles for a lot of my repeat clients Shelby Morgan, Mike Manos and Megagonefree

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Goldtone MasterWorks, LLC has mastered most of my catalogue from the past 5 years. My go to!

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Digital. Recall.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I promise to be honest with you and get the best out of you

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Getting to see my artists reactions when their song is finally out in the world!

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: New clients always seem surprised how much I can add musically. A lot of people think I'm just an engineer.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: Get to know their styles and see if we're a good fit

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Developing relationships in this industry is super important so it's worth trying to find someone who's in it for the long haul with you. And if you find that person do your best to trust them.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: MIDI Keyboard with faders, Computer, Airpods, Dangerous AD+, a good interface

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: Been doing this for about 14 years. Was a guitar player who was honestly sick of being in bands. Decided to learn how to make music without the help of others but funny enough have since been really excited about collaborating more lately

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: I'd say open minded

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: Daniel Caesar because he has such a unique sound that speaks to me. Phoebe Bridgers-see Daniel Caesar

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: If you solo do it very intentionally and for a VERY short time. Every move should be made within the context of the song.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: A lot of Pop, R&B, Indie

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: Being adaptive

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: Whatever has influenced me over the years. Beyond that and maybe most importantly I bring an intuition about what a song or piece of music needs.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: First I usually have a conversation with the artist and get to know where they're coming from. What's influencing them at that time and what lead up to where they are now is super important so I can do my best to go down the right paths and include certain key elements that are important to them. From there I usually start getting into a bit of a flow state and trying things with them in the room or online. I find getting instant feedback from people I'm working with is a huge part of my "process". What we are collectively feeling moment to moment has everything to do with where we go next. Without making it sound too esoteric artists I work with are kind of always laying stuff down and coming up with new ideas back and forth until we feel it's done. There isn't a set order more or less.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: I work out of a few rooms at Wrightway Studios in Baltimore. Mostly the C room though because it's super flat, has two sets of speakers for me to monitor on as well as some fantastic pres.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: People like Blake Mills, Shawn Everett, Joseph Lorge, Jon Castelli have been huge role models for me lately. Their ability to adapt to the music and do what best serves each song is so important and what I strive to be able to do every day.

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: People often come to me with song lyrics written but still need production, additional writing, help with harmonies etc and finally have me engineer it to start to finish.
