Interview with WYATT | Billboard#1 Songwriter
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I’m especially proud of my recent release with BTS Jin, “Don’t Say You Love Me”. Seeing a song I worked on connect with so many people around the world is truly surreal. My role was writer/producer/background vocalist.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I’m finishing development on my artist project, producing upcoming releases for indie artists, and collaborating with K-pop teams on songs for 2025/2026 releases.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Deza! She told me about this platform and is a true talent!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both — I love analog color (especially for vocals and piano), but digital gives me speed and flexibility. Best-case scenario: use analog tastefully inside a digital workflow.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: You’ll walk away with something stronger — more intentional, more marketable, and more emotionally connected than when you started.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Helping people find the version of their song that they felt in their head but couldn’t quite land. That moment when it clicks — there’s nothing better.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: “Can you make this into something cut-worthy?” Absolutely — that’s what I do best. Whether you’re 80% there or starting from scratch, I’ll help shape the final version so it lands with your audience or target artist.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That hit songs just “happen.” Behind every great track is tons of structure, intention, and refinement. Even magic has a method.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: • What’s your goal for this song? • Who are your sonic references? • Are you looking for feedback, polish, or full topline support?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Be clear about your goals and don’t be afraid to share rough ideas or influences. The more I understand your vision, the more tailored and impactful I can make the work.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My upright piano, my apollo, my U87, my Fender Bullet, and my laptop
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I grew up playing classical and jazz piano in Tulsa, Oklahoma, then studied songwriting and jazz piano at Berklee College of Music. I’ve written professionally for the last 8+ years, with credits including BTS’s Jin, RIIZE, Diplo, Trippie Redd, and NCT Dream.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Playful, emotional, and vivid. My writing blends modern pop polish with nostalgic melodic instincts, often pulling from vintage influences and theatrical elements.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I’d love to work with Clairo — her tone and nostalgic aesthetic match my love for vintage-feeling melodies and emotional pop. I think we’d create something timeless but left-of-center.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: When in doubt, simplify. Great songs don’t need layers of complexity to shine — they need intention, dynamics, and space for the vocal to breathe.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work in pop, K-pop, R&B, alt-pop, and sync-friendly material — anything melody-driven with emotional payoff and a clear sonic identity.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Hook writing — I specialize in writing choruses that hit hard, feel effortless, and stay stuck in your head. I also have a knack for reshaping songs to be more compelling and cut-ready.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring earworm melodies and unique lyrics that stick. Whether it’s elevating an existing idea or building something from scratch, I make sure the final product connects — emotionally and commercially.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: For feedback services, I start by deeply listening to the song and identifying what’s working, what’s not, and what can be optimized melodically or lyrically. I then provide either written notes or a voice/video memo with direct, actionable insights. For writing projects, I’ll review your brief or track, ask key creative questions, then build a topline or lyrics that serve the song’s purpose — whether that’s a viral-ready hook or a vulnerable, emotional payoff. I aim to keep communication clear, turnaround fast, and the final product undeniably stronger than what you started with.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work out of a streamlined, pro-grade home studio featuring a Neumann U87, Apollo X4, Yamaha U3 upright piano, and a blend of analog and digital gear. I use Logic Pro, Waves, UAD, Autotune Unlimited, and select boutique plugins to refine toplines, polish demos, and deliver high-quality vocals and recordings.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I’m inspired by the songwriting genius of Paul McCartney, the emotional depth of Frank Ocean, the modern flair of Charlie Puth, and the sonic color of producers like Jack Antonoff. I also draw from the innovation of K-pop producers who constantly push genre boundaries — blending sharp melodies with bold production choices.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I help artists and songwriters elevate their songs through topline writing, lyric polish, and professional song feedback. Whether it’s developing a cut-ready hook, rewriting a verse that’s not quite landing, or giving actionable insight on a demo, I bring years of hit-level experience to every project. My clients range from rising indie acts to major-label artists prepping pitch-ready material.
