I am a media composer and sound designer who strives to produce innovative and sophisticated scores and ambiences. I have experience working within both screen and stage productions.
My name is James Gabb and I am a composer, producer and sound designer based in York.
I discovered my passion for composing music when I was thirteen, and since then I have written music for concert performances, theatre productions, and short films.
I believe that sound and music is crucial for immersion and storytelling, and I strive in exploring the best way to serve a creative vision. My aim is to devise innovative ways to soundtrack a project with detail and precision.
Whilst being proficient in orchestral, piano and electronic scores, I am always eager to explore different styles and instrumentation.
I am a BA Music and Sound Recording graduate of the University of York. In September, I will continue my studies in York through an MA in Music: Composition for Film and Television.

Interview with James Gabb
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I make sure to ask for any initial ideas or preferences the client may have - ultimately I am serving their creative vision so it is important to have as much information to produce the best work possible.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is defined by sophisticated sonic palettes and an astute attention to the finer details within a score. My output ranges from orchestral scores to electroacoustic soundtracks, but my approach to refining a sonic identity is consistent throughout.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am currently augmenting my body of work through studying a master's degree in Music: Composition for Film and Television at the University of York.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I can guarantee full commitment to achieving the best work I can provide, ensuring that deadlines are met and maintaining steady communication.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I recently completed the score for "Scarlet", a film noir short film. I delved into soundtracks from Golden Age cinema to inform my process and had the opportunity to experiment with compositional techniques of jazz.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love how it gives me an opportunity to explore new sounds, timbres and styles that I can utilise within my professional practice.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Don't be afraid to shoot me a message - I'm always looking for new people to work with.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I will usually evaluate the client's creative vision, noting down the desired mood, atmosphere and aesthetic choices for cues. I will then sketch out ideas for key moments which will then be fleshed out and arranged. I always ensure that each creative decision I make is in service of the overall creative vision, and I would communicate with the client to achieve this.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I mainly write original music for short films and theatre productions.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My ability to communicate with a client in order to inform my creative decisions and to ensure that their prospective soundtrack is in safe hands. This allows me to deliver soundtracks more efficiently and to a higher standard.
