Interview with J.D. Boiston
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: .Analog AND digital. We must draw on the qualities of both.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Listening to music every day makes me happy.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Many artists believe that I can work from insufficiently crafted raw material. Sound engineering isn't a magic wand. I wouldn't be able to deliver the best work if the raw material wasn't crafted with passion.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What emotion do you want to convey through your music? What do you want listeners to feel when listening to your music?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Let your inspiration flow and let me take care of the technical side!
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: After studying sound engineering, I worked as a solo artist and with bands for 16 years. I released music on renowned labels in the industry as well as on smaller independent labels for which I also worked as a sound engineer. I started my own music labels 13 years ago and we continue to release music regularly to this day.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: My focus is to respect and to follow the artist vision. As a mixing and/or mastering engineer, my job is to apply the last layer of varnish on the building constructed by the artist.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I use an analog summing mixer (Neve 8816) for group busses or stems mixing to obtain a warm and glued 2-tracks. All the processing is done ITB, in order to be as precise as possible (and also for session recalls).
