Sean Frayne

Indie Pop/Rock/Folk Producer

Sean Frayne on SoundBetter

I make good songs great - don’t just take my word for it or go by streams/credits. Listen to my music, compare it with other producers, and let your ears decide (just check what they’re actually credited for and that they didn’t just plug in a mic that one time for Adele!).

My stats won’t blow you away and I’m yet to receive a Grammy nomination, but I do write, perform, produce and mix everything myself, no session players required, and I work at multiple studios here in Melbourne incl my home studio (Max Martin and Pharrell probably started in their living rooms too). I can help with songwriting, writing/co-writing from scratch or working on your existing songs, refining until it's undeniably great. I can also help with mentoring, coaching and marketing strategies.

Current stats: 5,479 Spotify followers, 1.5m total streams. Last year I hit 25k monthly listeners, placing me in the top 1.7% of artists globally. I’ve landed tracks on Spotify editorial playlists including Fresh Finds (1.2m subs) and Fresh Finds Pop, plus algorithmic playlists like Discover Weekly and Release Radar. I’ve collaborated with local and international emerging artists including Korean DJ Minlee (1.2m followers), Francis Li, Shayne Cook and MOZË. My songs have been signed to label deals with Position Music (LA) and Baby Lemon (Seoul), with multiple tracks accepted into LA-based Crucial Music’s sync catalogue. I’m also a three-time semi-finalist in the International Songwriting Competition.

I don’t take on every project; I’m selective, even with my own music - but I’ll listen and get back to you either way. I’m listening out for great songs.

Interview with Sean Frayne

  1. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  2. A: Do your homework. Check on social media that they are who they say they are. View credits on Spotify.

  3. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  4. A: My Fender strat. my laptop, a midi keyboard, a SSL2+ interface, Beyerdynamic DT770 headphones

  5. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  6. A: I've been writing for 20+ years, was in a couple of bands and for the last 7 years I've been releasing under my own name as an independent artist. Started out with friends and acquaintances in the local Melbourne music scene asking me to produce for them and really enjoy doing that too.

  7. Q: How would you describe your style?

  8. A: Not generic

  9. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  10. A: You - because you might be the next Olivia Dean or Abel (aka The Weeknd)

  11. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  12. A: Recording engineers aren't music producers.

  13. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  14. A: Indie pop, indie rock, alternative, folk, electronic

  15. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  16. A: I won't just record you with some instruments, pull up the faders and call it a day. I'll build an actual song with a unique and identifiable sound and vibe that stands above the rest and connects with an audience on an emotional level

  17. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  18. A: 20+ years of songwriting experience. Expertise in production and vocal production; Avid Pro Tools and Melodyne.

  19. Q: What's your typical work process?

  20. A: Songwriting is key, production isn't going to make an average song great, so I start with the song and re-work it with the artist if necessary until it's the best version of itself. Depending on the project, building from ideas in the demo or listening to ref tracks for direction on production/vibe. From there, fleshing the track out with instruments, samples and vocal production. Mixing it to a commercial standard, bringing it to life in the best way.

  21. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  22. A: I work out of multiple studios around Melbourne; Abbotsford, Cheltenham and Balwyn, so this will depend on your needs and what's convenient location-wise.

  23. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  24. A: Max Martin, Savan Kotecha, Daniel Nigro, Ilya Salmanzadeh, Cirkut

  25. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  26. A: Turning demos in finished, release-ready songs.
