Interview with Javier Martinez
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Audio engineer for the well-known Grammy winner pop producer Khris Lorenz. Beat making for Analisa Corral and Not That Great music. I'm also in the mixing stage of the debut album of a Mexican rock band I recorded as well.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Yes, Analisa Corral.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both (I know I know). Nowadays you can work with both and usually get the best from both worlds. It also depends on the type of music I'm working on. For mixing, I always try to mix on a mixing board (Tree Audio at the Hobby Shop Studios) depending on the budget and time.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Be careful about making your song too busy! (Kill your darlings) Prioritize elements and let them show.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Mainly pop music. I also work with different rock bands.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: It's always difficult to talk about a single "strongest skill". Thanks to the many hours I've spent tuning and editing vocals I consider that to be my strongest skill. Mixing is also an area where I feel really confident about my skill.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: It changes with time. Currently, most of my time is dedicated to mixing different projects I've been hired for. I'm always making beats and trying to produce bands with my free time. As the audio engineer of producer Khris Lorenz, I found my self constantly recording for the different projects he has.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: Their satisfaction is my main goal, I will do everything I can to make them happy with my work.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Shure Sm57, MacBook Pro, Open-back Headphones, Apollo twin interface, midi keyboard.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Kendrick Lamar, I love how creative his songs are. His artistic vision is amazing. Besides this, I also like most of his songs have a message in them. He is not doing music just for the money.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Brian Eno, Kendrick Lamar, Kanye West, Gorillaz, Daniel Lanois, George Martin, Dr. Dre just to mention a few.
