Eran Alpern on SoundBetter

My story begins in Eilat, Israel, growing up drumming and studying music. Once I discovered the depth of music's production process - I dived into a world of engineering, production and sound. Over the last 15 years I was lucky to Record / Mix / Master and collaborate with some great artists. You can find some of them here below.

Interview with Eran Alpern

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: I work on several Mixing and Mastering Projects - Most of them are remote due to the Covid-19.

  3. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  4. A: Laptop, Apollo X with UAD Plugins, RCA 77, a pair or Neve 1073's and a FairChild Compressor.

  5. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  6. A: Tiny Fingers - The Fall (LP - 2015). That one was extra special, Tiny Fingers are a famous Indie band in Israel, in 2014 they have signed with the biggest indie label in Israel called "ANOVA", i was lucky enough to have 2 intense months with the band in the lable's studio recording the band's album while outside it war WAR. we had to go the nearest bomb shelter every time there was an alarm. it was super special. the album itself is amazing :)

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: a fast response and a quick delivery. BUT - i will always take the extra time working on your project if needed.

  9. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  10. A: "how do you like me to bounce the audio files?" - well. it really depends :) i usually work on dry / unprocessed signals, but some producers give WET and Processed audio tracks. sometimes it's for the best.

  11. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  12. A: "a great mix can save a bad production". Well, that is half true, i can make you sound bigger, but if we both do are jobs right we can really take it to the next level.

  13. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  14. A: "tell me about the production process", "tell me the your history or / and the artist's history",

  15. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  16. A: Don't pay to much attention to meters and forget about the red lights, think about the emotions and the ideas behind the song and focus on getting them out the best way possible.

  17. Q: What's your typical work process?

  18. A: Mixing and Mastering ITB. the way i see it , you can get the best results with ITB mixing. it's more functional and fast. you can a clean sound or a dirty sound if needed. i also think that there is a way to get the dirt and grit which is super close to that analog sound with the right use of plugin emulations.

  19. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  20. A: Electronic, Pop, Rock, Indie

  21. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  22. A: Beck, David Bowie, Radiohead, Tame Impala - on the musicians side. Michael Brauer, Tchad Blake, Jaycen Joshua, Andrew Scheps - on the engineers side.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: A wide stereo Mix. I will always keep the MONO banging, No Worries :)

  25. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  26. A: Mixing and Mastering

  27. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  28. A: 100% Mixing and Mastering ITB. the way i see it , you can get the best results in ITB mixing. it's more functional and fast. you can a clean sound or a dirty sound if needed. i also think that there is a way to get the dirt and grit which is very very close to the analog sound with the right use of plugin emulations.

  29. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  30. A: The excitement and thrill. the goose bumps when something makes you emotional and hits.

  31. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  32. A: Take your time make your project ready for mixing, do the right editing , choose the right takes, make the production the best you can and from there i can really take your stuff higher. let's help each other make the best out your production.

  33. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  34. A: Beck / Bowie / Thom Yorke - because of their innovation and original way of doing stuff.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I hear the song and before thinking about the technical side - i think about how to take the musician and producer's ideas and make them bigger, clearer. finding the right way to get the emotion and intention out there.
