Robert is a great to work with and a super talented vocalist and songwriter. I gave him an instrumental to work with and no vocal melodies written and the melody ideas he heard really knocked me out. Awesome collaborator too! He's receptive to feedback and will work with you to get your song where you want it.

If you're working in rock/metal, he can seriously bring it with his screams \m/. Looking forward to working with him again!

Rob is a master at his craft, a truly rare vocal talent, and an absolute pleasure to work with! He gave his all to embrace and cater to my out-of-the-box vision, and far exceeded my expectations. Haha I'm literally motivated to write more music if just for the excuse to work with him again. This dude rocks and if you're deliberating between him and another vocalist, you gotta pick Rob. He's your guy.

Interview with Robert Matlock

  1. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  2. A: One of my favorite songwriters out there right now is Max Martin. I think he is a highly polished and perfected version of myself, being we view things very similarly when it comes to writing songs and more specifically, vocals. When it comes to writing the vocals for a song, he uses something known as "melodic math" which is a great way to write vocal motifs so that they get stuck in a listener's head when paired with a great melody. He structures his vocal melodies and motifs in such a way that when you hear the chorus for the first time, it almost sounds like you've heard it before, because little bits and pieces of the chorus were scattered throughout the verse and intro. It gives the listener a sense of familiarity and really gives them an "ear worm" after hearing it. This is the reason he has written most of the biggest songs over the last 20 years. I can only hope that I develop and reach a song writing level of that magnitude one day.

  3. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  4. A: I have singing and writing songs for 10 years now, and it has finally gotten to the point where I can earn a decent living and do this full time. I will continue to learn and grow, becoming better at my craft each and every day.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: When I first joined SoundBetter I wanted to bring another vocalist onboard to one of my projects to help write. I chose a guy by the name of Chris Hodges, and he delivered. The guy has a fantastic voice and really knows how to dial in a great lyric and melody.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: You and your audience will never be disappointed, it is as simple as that. I will do everything in my power to make sure we create something truly special.

  9. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  10. A: It might be blasphemy, but digital all the way. Besides the obvious financial motivation for choosing digital, it's much more flexible in it's usage.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I LOVE getting to work with some many different minds, every job and client is so unique, every one has a different story that they want to tell. This allows to me stay flexible musically and keeps me very well rounded so that I can be helpful to a variety of clients.

  13. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  14. A: I bring to the table all of the knowledge I've accrued over the last 10 years. I have spent thousands of hours honing and polishing my skills, and in all of that I time I have developed a true sense of what does, and doesn't work. I have worked on countless songs in countless genres, and even though the styles and approaches may all be different, the core of what makes a great song is the same.

  15. Q: What's your typical work process?

  16. A: I always start by communicating with the client about what they want from their song, what are they trying to accomplish, what are they wanting "say" with their song, what's the message. I typically will go over my client's influences and find out what niches they love in music and try my best to work that in to final product in a unique and creative way.

  17. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  18. A: I primarily aid songwriters and producers with vocals. Most of the time they come to me with a rough idea of what they want melodically and lyrically. I'll then break down the song and align myself with the emotion and overall tone of the track, and then find the "pocket" that best suits the vocals.

  19. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  20. A: I currently work with a UA Apollo Twin DUO interface that produces sound through 2 JBL LSR305 monitors. For vocals I record in a treated vocal booth. I use many different microphones to record, but I mainly use the Manley Reference Cardioid and Neumann U87 microphones. I run my vocals into a Neve 1073SPX or Focusrite ISA Two preamp, completely dry (no EQ, compression etc. unless otherwise specified).

  21. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  22. A: I just finished wrapping up a song with a producer, the song is for a band that is fronted by one of my best friends, his band of which is signed to a reputable label and has over a million plays via spotify alone. I worked extensively on the vocals, handling most of the topline melodies and aiding with lyrics.

  23. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  24. A: I am currently working on 2 different personal projects, both of which I sing and write all of the music for. 1 is an alternative metal band that influences from bands like Linkin Park and Breaking Benjamin. The other is a pop rock band in the style of Twenty One Pilots, Imagine Dragons, and One Republic.

  25. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  26. A: Simply, there are no rules.

  27. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  28. A: I specialize in rock and pop music but I've written and recorded my voice on various metal, rap, folk, country, and punk songs as well, just to name a few.

  29. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  30. A: I've always been extremely fascinated by the band Linkin Park. The band has always been extremely flexible and creative when it comes to their music, and they've never been afraid of taking chances. My general style of songwriting is heavily influenced by their work, and I'd love nothing more than to get in a room with those guys and write a record.
