Carey Clayton on SoundBetter

I help ambitious artists create standout professional songs. I do a lot of work in Pop, R&B, and indie rock, but have deep and broad experience in many genres. I've helped many artists realize their songs ideas into full, finished, radio-ready tracks. Nothing gives me greater joy than bringing a client's musical vision into reality.

Whether you're a completely new artist looking for direction and guidance to form your sound, or an experienced pro looking for a jolt of inspiration to take your music in exciting new directions, you can be confident that we'll be able to create something great together. Having a deep musical knowledge through songwriting, production, arranging, and playing multiple instruments, I'll be able to compliment your strengths, and fill in areas that may not be as strong.

I can create full instrumental productions to your song ideas, co-write something from scratch, or build onto an idea that you already have. In all the above scenarios, by the end you will have a professional, radio-ready, killer song, EP, or album on your hands.

While I typically oversee the entire production of a record, my individual instrument abilities, particularly guitar, bass, and keys, lend themselves to creating specific parts within an already existing production.

With a background as a touring musician, I have extensive knowledge of how recorded music can translate effectively in a live setting. For many artists I work with, I create a "live set" for their performances to be as compelling as the record. In many cases this is a playback rig tailored specifically to the needs of the artist.

If you have any further questions in what I can do for you, don't hesitate to reach out. Cheers!

The minute I met Carey I knew I would be crazy not to work with such a talented, genuine individual. He’s an incredible guitarist and producer committed to helping you find the best version of your song. I appreciated how collaborative and open our process was. He really understood the style and vibe I was going for and worked hard to help me create something special. Collaborating with him was a joy from start to finish. I highly recommend him to all musical artists.

Carey is An Awesome Guitarist/ producer/ and all around musician. His talent is one thing but his ear is another! He has the ability to tap into any genre and tastefully make it work! Making music with Carey has been completely organic and effortless. I respect his musicality so much and I'm so excited to continue making music together. HE KNOWS WHAT HE'S DOING. Carey is definitely one to watch this 2018! +++++ (and he's really funny!!)

Carey's like my writing soul partner. Every session with him is fluid, free-flowing, authentic, and easy. Watching him build out my ideas into a blooming, full, lush song is such a joy. You'd be lucky to work with him.

Carey is by far my favorite person to work with. Not only is he incredibly talented, he’s one of the most genuine people out there. Our collaborative process is really great. Carey is awesome at bouncing back and forth ideas , and not just on the producer end of things. I feel very lucky to have found him.

Carey is a wonderful producer! I came to him with four barely arranged songs and we worked together for months arranging, producing, and perfecting them (with him at the helm). Carey is extremely talented and creative, and he's a fan of all kinds of music, so he's flexible to work on a wide variety of stuff. Carey plays the guitar extremely well (which I took advantage of a lot on my EP), and he's also really really good at synth work and coming up with the right sounds for each song. Plus, he's a good, open-minded guy -- very easy to work with and really puts the music first!

Interview with Carey Clayton

  1. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  2. A: I love creating music. I especially love bringing to life a musical vision a client has.

  3. Q: How would you describe your style?

  4. A: I lot of my productions feature lush ambient textures amongst grooving drums and percussion layers, and live instrumentation.

  5. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  6. A: I've been working on lot of Indie Pop, Alternative R&B, and Indie Rock lately.

  7. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  8. A: I started as a professional touring and recording guitarist. Through developing guitar parts I learned how certain parts compliment a song and that the sum is greater than it's parts.

  9. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  10. A: One concept I've learned over the years of producing, is to try to approach something from multiple angles. For instance, you're working on the verse of a song, and your instinct, (or habits) send you in one direction. If you come back to this section a little while later and deliberately the opposite approach or something altogether different, you've now doubled your creative palette for that section and you're able to pick and choose the best version.

  11. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  12. A: I have my studio in Brooklyn setup for recording vocals, acoustic instruments, as well guitars and bass. I have a large array of soft synths and a deep library of drum and percussion instruments to compliment .

  13. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  14. A: I most often turn client's song demos or ideas into full finished productions.
