Interview with Pawnshop Creative Labs

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: One of our favorite projects was Love Darling's first full-length vinyl release, The Occupant Theory, which was self produced by the band and made possible by a successful Kickstarter campaign, sonic sun-flares transmissions and tremendous fan support, which then led to their first five-week national US tour in support of The Occupant Theory! Upon their return home, the album then won the 12th Independent Music Awards popular vote for Best Indie alt-rock album of 2012!

  3. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  4. A: Aside from over 15 years experience both as artists and producers ourselves, we also have extensive expertise helping to write & arrange song forms, instrumental programming, recording, mixing, mastering and supporting the artist to bring out their best performance. We consider the artistry of the song and the performance to be just as important as the sound quality of the final mix.

  5. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  6. A: In addition to several scoring projects and placements for TV commercials, we just finished our 12th song for Militia Vox's upcoming 2-CD release, The Villainess. (http://www.militiaismyname.com/) We are also currently finishing the vocal tracks on Love Darling's upcoming Lovejoy EP. (lovedarlingmusic.com)

  7. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  8. A: Indie-Rock, Indie-Pop, Singer-Songwriter, Americana, Acoustic, EDM, Electro, Pop, Hip-Hop, Trip-Hop, Rock, Hard Rock, Metal & Soundtrack/Orchestral.

  9. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  10. A: Making low-budget projects sound as epic as big-budget projects.

  11. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  12. A: We work in a comfortable, creative and intimate studio that uses Protools, Reason & Audition. We record most of our vocals on a Soundelux U-99 tube mic and EMI Abbey Road Preamp. We have produced, mixed and mastered many band projects but our setup is especially ideal for singer/songwriters & solo artists, ranging from pop to rock to acoustic to R&B, who are looking for a more relaxed space to work out song arrangements and who want to create professional quality demos and final recordings for their projects.

  13. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  14. A: Our range of clients has typically been pretty varied and we have a blast working with many different styles and projects. But I would say our most common music production projects have been in the indie-rock, indie-pop, rock to hard rock/metal, singer-songwriter, acoustic, EDM, electro, pop & hip-hop/trip-hop genres. Ultimately we love the challenge of making every project sound as professional and epic as possible.
