Philip Larsen on SoundBetter

I have won a Grammy Award (mixer - Kylie Minogue) and worked with some of the biggest names in pop and dance music, delivering 100s of productions, mixes and remixes to the world's best-known record labels. I'd love to work with your vision and ideas, bringing my experience to your music, songs and recordings.

I'll build on your production, demo, vocals or even start from scratch and your song will burst into life with a tight production and punchy mix. Click on "Contact" to tell me about your project and we can get started!

Highlights include official remixes for Katy Perry (x6), Lady Gaga, Charli XCX, Moby (x4), Emeli Sandé, Ellie Goulding, Nicole Scherzinger, Britney Spears and the Far East Movement.

Soft Cell's album "Happiness not included...", which I produced with the band in and out of lockdowns, charted at no.7 in the UK album charts in May 2022.

As Manhattan Clique, I am well-known for my electro-based work with pioneering acts OMD, Erasure, Human League, Kim Wilde and The B-52's. We also co-wrote and produced Erasure frontman Andy Bell’s debut Electric Blue album. I love playing live, performing with xPropaganda (Claudia Brücken and Susanne Freytag).

I am fortunate to work with some major International artists, featuring songs with Swedish House Mafia and remixing for Mylène Farmer, the most successful French female artist of all time. Mylène's duet with Moby, "Slipping Away" (which we produced) spent several weeks at no.1 in the French singles chart. I also produced songs for German girlband Queensberry, including their highest charting single "Hello" (peak position no.4).

Oh...heard "Jenny" by Studio Killers? We'll keep that one on the low!

Working with Philip was a real pleasure. He understood immediately what the song was about and where it had to be lead to. He supported the project with ideas and additional production, and helped to lift the song to another level. He was exactly was we hoped for and needed, and even more than we expected. Higly recommendable, thank you Philip!

Philip did an amazing job on saving my mix (synthpop), which I was struggling with for weeks. With his amazing feeling of what the mix was needing, he really gave that necessary twist that made the track stand out! looking forward to mixing more of my tracks with him, highly recommend!

Philip was the ideal collaborator for my remixing project. My songs are very personal and close to me, and I appreciated that Philip took the time to understand my vision for the original song and the new mix, actively contributed his own ideas, and managed to bring a new life to the song while still capturing its cathartic atmosphere. He openly discussed feedback and was clearly passionate about what he created. I will be working with Philip again!

Honestly, my best experience on soundbetter so far. I asked Philip to write me strings and piano chords based on a reference song and as soon as he sent me the first version I was blown away and he even exceeded my expectations. Absolute pro with excellent taste. This is one of many reviews I will give Philip. Thanks Phil!

I've had the privilege of having Philip mix (and master) my entire 8-song record and I can't be more satisfied with how it's all turned out. Excellent communicating and discussing production, open to notes and adjustments and overall a great creative mind (and perceptive ear) to bounce around ideas with, a necessity in any collaboration. I would 1000% recommend him to anyone looking to polish up a project and get epic results.

Interview with Philip Larsen

  1. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  2. A: My laptop (with Logic), Genelecs, weighted USB keyboard, Juno-60 and a solar power generator.

  3. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  4. A: Just get the best possible recording of whatever it is being played/sung and the rest falls into place much easier.

  5. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  6. A: I co-produced and co-wrote a song "True Colours" which was featured on a major UK TV campaign promoting diversity and equality in all its forms. It was an honour to be part of something so forward thinking.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both. Analog for synths and as of recently, digital for quality of plug-ins, reverbs and ease of recall of mixes.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I will get it right for you.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Making music in all its forms, satisfied customers and hearing tracks I have worked on, on the radio.

  13. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  14. A: Having heard the original piece of music, I ask them what they are listening to at the moment and depending on response, would suggest some ideas for their mix/remix/production. That way, we start off in the right place.

  15. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  16. A: Daft Punk. My inspiration musically & professionally.

  17. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  18. A: A musical approach to mixing and remixing. Plus having been fortunate to work on so many mixes, a quick turnaround!

  19. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  20. A: I try to be as faithful to the original as possible, whilst keeping an eye on what will work commercially.

  21. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  22. A: A collection of gear started by my father in the 70s, being brought right up to date with my laptop and various mixing desks along the way. I wouldn't go without my Genelec speakers, on which I have mixed everything in the last 15 years and trust implicitly.

  23. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  24. A: I grew up as a fan of Jeff Lynne and Jean-Michel Jarre was my neighbour. After that, 80s electronic music in all its forms became my inspiration (Kraftwerk, Human League, Vince Clarke) before the 90s kicked in and I threw myself into creating music for the clubs, in many forms. Time spent in Berlin with DJ producers such as Sven Vath and Paul van Dyk gave me the kick to really go for it myself.

  25. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  26. A: Typically, my role falls between mixing and remixing. Usually clients come to me with well-formed ideas, that need a little push over the line. I have a lot of analogue gear and like to try and incorporate a sound or two from my studio in each mix. Only if it improves the original of course!
