Interview with Eric Lund

  1. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  2. A: If I were stranded on a deserted island, I wouldn't bring any gear. Instead, I would bring my two dogs, my family, and my friends, we would dance around a bonfire every night and enjoy life!

  3. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  4. A: The endless creative possibilities and the ever-changing landscape of both music production but also the music industry as a whole.

  5. Q: How would you describe your style?

  6. A: These types of questions are always difficult for me because I create music in so many EDM genres. I don't think I have a specific "style," but my melodies are generally uplifting, and I usually incorporate atmospheric elements into my music.

  7. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  8. A: There are too many to count! But narrowing it down to one producer and one vocalist/songwriter I have to say Illenium, that guy creates amazing and unexpected melodies and never fails to amaze me! As for the vocalist/songwriter, I would have to choose Annika Wells. Her beautiful vocals and captivating lyrics always leave a lasting impression on me.

  9. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  10. A: Find a production workflow that makes sense to you, and remember that there is no "Right way" of making music, it's only "your way" and if "your way" works don't listen to what others are saying, but never expect "your way" to be the best way, so always try to improve your workflow when you have the opportunity! I guess this is more of a philosophical mindset than a production tip, well you can always ask me again for a tip I guess.

  11. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  12. A: As I stated in the previous question I usually work on different house music genres, but it comes and goes, sometimes I switch it up with some Future Bass, and sometimes it's more pop, and other times it is something completely different. But, EDM is always the main genre!

  13. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  14. A: I have one word for you: samples! I absolutely love manipulating them by reversing, chopping, and stretching. This is probably why I enjoy making drum loops for EDMPop songs. Unfortunately, percussion in House songs, which I normally produce is typically very straightforward.

  15. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  16. A: While I create music in a variety of genres, one thing that is consistently present in my music is my unique vibe and uplifting melodies.

  17. Q: What's your typical work process?

  18. A: The first two days of production are crucial for setting the vibe and tone of the track. In my experience, the finished production rarely sounds much different from what I come up with during those initial two days. While samples, melodies, and occasionally even the chords, tempo, and key of the song may change throughout the process, the overall vibe remains consistent. Once the vibe is set, I focus on structuring the song and determining where I need to add elements to keep the track flowing and fill any empty spaces. This is often the most time-consuming part of the production process, as it requires me to listen to the track countless times. However, if I'm still enjoying the song after listening to it repeatedly, then I know it has the potential to be a hit!

  19. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  20. A: To be honest, I work with a very portable setup, although I would love to build a new studio someday. Currently, my setup consists of a MacBook Pro, a Steinberg UR22 MkII (which I definitely need to upgrade), Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro headphones, a pair of Yamaha HS5s, and countless hard drives.

  21. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  22. A: R3hab, The Chainsmokers, Illenium, and more recently, Marc Benjamin and Lumix. Ian Kirkpatrick is also a producer that I love learning from! Of course, there are so many others that listing them here would be impossible!

  23. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  24. A: I am primarily a producer, so most people contact me to produce a song based on a vocal idea and/or simple chords. However, mixing and mastering are also common types of work.
