Thomas Shaw

Mix Engineer

Thomas Shaw on SoundBetter

3x Grammy Nominated Producer Mixing songs with 1,000,000,000+ streams worldwide. I have worked on major releases such as Kx5 - Kaskade vs Deadmau5, Sofi Tukker and Loud Luxury.

I started as a touring artist playing all major festivals (ULTRA, Tommorrowland etc.) and selling out venues all around the world. I have had a lot of success in my artist career but I have taken a step away from touring and focus on Mixing / Mastering. Accolades I have include multiple International / US Platinum / Gold Certified Records, 3x Grammy Nominations, Top40 Radio Hits, Top100 billboard Hits, BBC Radio One and SiriusXM Radio.

I have a big passion for mixing and mastering and I really enjoy it. I like finding creative ways to bring the best out of a work. I always stood out as a mix engineer throughout my career and I would end up doing the final mix on the projects I worked on because of this. I enjoy the people I work with and I look forward to getting in the studio.

I am comfortable mixing almost any genre but I have the most experience in Electronic, Pop, Dance, EDM.

While I am focusing on Mixing and Mastering for the purpose of this post, I am still a fully accoladed producer and do production work as well. I specialize in electronic music namely house, tech, chill, progressive, techno etc.

Interview with Thomas Shaw

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Probably "Purple Hat" - it was one of the bigger records I have worked on. Sofi Tukker are really fun to work with.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Lots of fun stuff. Production wise I produce a lot of chill stuff and house atm.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: first time here

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: both of course

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: Its gonna slap.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Its fun! I enjoy working on music.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: How do you do it? How are you so fast? I usually just laugh

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: I think most people underestimate how much a good mix can change a record.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: Due date / Timeline. I have a very high return customer rate so I don't usually have too many questions haha.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Specific direction helps me do the best job i can. Being organized (stems etc.) is very key too.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Acoustic guitar. PC, speakers, midi keyboard, headphones

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I have been doing this for ~15 years. I was a heavy touring artist and while I still am an artist, I tour much less and do much more production work. It was a natural transition.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Clean. Polished.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Skrillex, hes super nice but we have never accually produced together.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  32. A: Electronic music.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Levels + gain staging. I have a very accurate ear. And quick turnaround.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: Being an artist myself its easy to get passionate about a record. Finding the magic in something that might be buried behind a poor mix then bringing that out is my specialty.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I try and get a vibe for what the song needs or is looking for. I repair things first and then accent and attenuate elements to bring out the energy to make it pop.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I have a fully treated home studio, its a super tight room, sounds incredible and makes it really easy to hear artifacts and details in a mix.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Cass at wired masters does a great job.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Stem Mixing and Mastering work.
