Interview with Jonas Quant

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: One of the projects that holds a special place in my heart is the production of Hurts' album "Happiness". This project was a journey of pure creativity and emotional honesty, marked by a collective inexperience that, rather than being a hindrance, became our greatest strength. At the time, we were a team driven more by passion than by industry know-how, navigating the complex process of album production largely through intuition. My role as the producer was not just about managing the technical aspects of recording and mixing; it was about fostering an environment where everyone felt free to express their ideas and emotions openly, without the shadow of commercial pressures looming over us. The absence of A&R representatives dictating our every move allowed us to create something truly unique and heartfelt. We trusted our instincts, followed our emotions, and embraced the freedom to experiment. This approach not only brought us closer as a team but also allowed us to craft an album that resonated deeply with listeners, reaching a level of success that, at the outset, seemed almost unimaginable. Looking back, I'm especially proud of "Happiness" not only because of the accolades it received but because it stands as a testament to the power of trusting oneself and the creative process. It taught me invaluable lessons about the importance of authenticity and courage in music production, principles that continue to guide my work today.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: At the moment, I'm immersed in an exciting blend of projects that spans from commercial work to deeply personal musical expressions. I'm putting the finishing touches on a launch advert for Volvo Trucks, a project that has allowed me to explore and create music that embodies the power, innovation, and reliability synonymous with their brand. It's been a thrilling journey to capture the essence of movement and progress in aural form. Simultaneously, I'm deeply engaged in finalizing my album "Human Race," a labor of love that weaves together my reflections and hopes into a tapestry of sound that I can't wait to share with the world. Alongside this, I'm wrapping up a techno/dance album that promises to ignite dance floors with its energy and innovation. In addition to these projects, I'm also collaborating on some work that, for now, remains under wraps. These endeavors are incredibly exciting and push the boundaries of my creative capabilities, though I must keep the details confidential at this stage. Rest assured, these projects are some of the most stimulating and innovative works I've been involved with, and I look forward to the moment when I can unveil them.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I have to check, will come back to this!

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: The debate between analog and digital isn't about what's better; it's about recognizing and harnessing the unique benefits each brings to the table. Analog gear, with its inherent warmth, can often introduce a certain vibe right from the get-go. The subtle noise from wires, the hum of circuits—they add layers of texture and story to the sound that digital tools strive to emulate. On the other hand, digital technology offers unparalleled precision, flexibility, and accessibility. It opens up a world of possibilities that were unimaginable just a few decades ago. The key in the digital realm is to be intentional about adding character and depth to your sounds. It's about crafting stories within every layer, ensuring that even the most pristine digital production carries the soul and narrative that analog naturally imbues. So, my approach is to blend the best of both worlds. Using analog to capture the raw, unfiltered essence of music, and digital to sculpt, refine, and expand the sonic landscape into something truly unique. It's not about choosing sides; it's about using every tool available to bring the music to life in the most authentic way possible.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: My promise to you is simple yet unwavering: I'm not happy until you are. This pledge is the cornerstone of my approach to every project I undertake. It means that from the first note to the final master, your vision, satisfaction, and aspirations are my top priorities. In our collaboration, you'll find a partner dedicated to excellence, transparency, and an open line of communication. My goal is to ensure that the music we create together not only meets but exceeds your expectations. This commitment to your happiness is not just about delivering a finished product; it's about providing an experience that is as rewarding as it is transformative. In essence, when you entrust me with your music, you're getting more than just a service; you're gaining a partner who is invested in your success and fulfillment. That's my promise to you.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: What I cherish most about my job is the unparalleled joy of retreating into my studio—the 'cave' where I'm free to build worlds out of sound. It's a space where creativity knows no bounds, and every session is an adventure. Despite the years and all the experiences I've gathered, stepping into my studio still fills me with the same excitement as a little kid chasing a dream. This process of creating, of weaving together melodies, rhythms, and textures into something that can move people, is profoundly fulfilling. It's not just about making music; it's about crafting experiences, emotions, and moments that resonate. Every day, I get to chase that dream, and in doing so, I hope to inspire others to feel, to dream, and to find a bit of themselves in the soundscapes I create. That, to me, is the greatest joy of all.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: When can we have this finished? "My goal is always to balance quality with efficiency. The timeline for finishing a project can vary depending on the complexity of the work and your specific needs. I like to start with a clear understanding of your vision and deadlines to create a realistic schedule. Communication is key, so we'll keep in close touch throughout the process to ensure we're aligned and can adjust as needed."

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: One of the biggest misconceptions about what I do is that the role of a music producer or songwriter is solely about creating beats or writing lyrics. In reality, it’s much more nuanced and involves a deep level of collaboration with artists. It’s about crafting a sound that aligns with their vision, helping them to articulate their ideas into music that resonates with listeners. Another common misunderstanding is the idea that technology can replace the human element in music production. While it’s true that we have more tools at our disposal than ever before, the essence of music creation is deeply human. It’s about emotion, storytelling, and connection—elements that no machine can fully replicate. Lastly, there’s often an underestimation of the amount of work that goes into producing a track. It’s not just about the moments of inspiration but also about the meticulous process of refining, mixing, and mastering to ensure that the final product is as close to perfection as possible.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: "Where do you want to go with your music?" This helps me understand not just the immediate project goals but also the long-term aspirations. It's about uncovering the journey they envision for themselves and their music. "How do you want to be perceived by your audience?" This question is crucial for crafting a sound and message that resonates. It's about understanding the artist's identity and how they wish to connect with their listeners. "Who are your influences?" Knowing who has shaped their musical taste gives me invaluable insight into their preferred soundscapes and the emotional or stylistic nuances they're drawn to.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: When looking to hire a provider like me, brace yourself for a journey that’s both deeply collaborative and refreshingly enjoyable. I believe in working closely with my clients, ensuring that our partnership is as personal and productive as it can be. This means open lines of communication, shared visions, and a commitment to achieving the highest quality of work together. Equally important, be prepared for a touch of silly humour along the way. Music creation is a profound process, but it’s the moments of light-heartedness and laughter that often spark the most creativity. This blend of tight collaboration and a relaxed, enjoyable atmosphere not only makes the process more fun but also more effective. In short, expect to be involved, expect excellence, and expect a few good laughs. Together, we’ll not only create something amazing but also enjoy the journey from start to finish.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: f I were to find myself on a desert island, with only five pieces of gear to keep my musical journey alive, my choices would reflect both my love for creating music and the practical necessities of island life. Here’s what I’d bring: Laptop: My digital canvas, essential for recording, producing, and mixing. It’s where all my ideas come to life, holding the software that allows for limitless creativity. Slate VSX Headphones: For impeccable sound quality and the ability to mix accurately even in the most unconventional of environments. Wunder Audio CM7 Microphone: This mic, with its warmth and clarity, would be my voice and instrument's best companion, capturing every nuance. Moog One Synthesizer: For its unparalleled sound design capabilities, offering a universe of sonic possibilities at my fingertips. Solar-Powered Charging Station: To ensure that my creative flow is never interrupted by something as mundane as a lack of power.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: From a child of six, fascinated by the analog synthesizers in my father's band's studio, to standing where I am today, my career path has been a lifelong odyssey through music. Now at 50, I can look back on decades spent not just in the company of synths and soundboards, but in the very heartbeat of the industry. The journey took a pivotal turn when I began releasing albums under the name Quant, gracing stages like the Roskilde Festival among others, and remixing tracks for luminaries such as Coldcut (the founders of Ninja Tune) and Kaskade. These experiences sharpened my skills and broadened my horizons, leading me to work with a diverse array of artists, helping them to shape and realize their musical visions. Today, alongside continuing my work with other artists, I'm channeling my energies into creating my third solo album—a project that feels like a culmination of the rich tapestry of experiences I've gathered over the years. Having been in this incredible world of music for over four decades, each step has been a learning curve, a chance to evolve and a way to express my deepest creative impulses.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: My style is an eclectic blend of soulful innovation and electronic sophistication, underscored by a keen sense of pop sensibility. I comfortably navigate through the realms of electronic pop and hip-hop, yet my music carries a timeless quality that transcends the constraints of any single genre. At the heart of my approach lies a dedication to authenticity, where each note and beat is crafted with intention and deep emotional resonance. My productions are designed not just to be heard but felt, reflecting a rich tapestry of influences from the pioneers of electronic music to the soul-stirring melodies of hip-hop legends. This style isn’t merely about blending sounds—it’s about telling stories, evoking feelings, and connecting with listeners on a profound level. It's this unique amalgamation of elements that defines my music and drives my creative process.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: If given the opportunity, working with Stevie Wonder would be a dream come true. His is a colorful soul that radiates through his music, embodying a level of musicianship I've always deeply admired and envied. Stevie Wonder's ability to blend soulful melodies with profound messages, all while pushing the boundaries of what's technically and creatively possible, is nothing short of inspirational. His impact on music is timeless, transcending genres and generations. Collaborating with such a legendary artist would not only be an honor but a profound learning experience, offering insights into the creative process of a true musical genius.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: One golden rule in music production is to embrace simplicity. It's tempting to layer track upon track, seeking complexity, but true artistry often lies in restraint. Before adding any element to your mix, ask yourself, "What purpose does this serve?" Every sound, every beat, and every note should have a clear role, whether it's driving the rhythm, highlighting a melody, or evoking an emotion. If it doesn't add meaningful value, it might be detracting from the essence of your creation. Strive for clarity and intentionality in your work; sometimes, less really is more.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: The music that resonates with me most, and which I find myself working on frequently, spans the vibrant spectrum of electronic pop and hip hop. My current passion project, my own album, is a testament to this. It’s a carefully curated blend of pop and timeless electronic music, all imbued with a soulful essence that seeks to connect on a deeper level. This inclination towards electronic pop music and hip hop isn’t just a preference; it’s where my expertise shines brightest. In these genres, I find the freedom to experiment with soundscapes, rhythms, and lyrical depth, creating tracks that are both innovative and emotionally resonant.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill lies in my ability to motivate and instill confidence in the people I work with. This stems from a lifetime spent between two speakers, working every day to hone my craft and understand the nuance of sound. My dedication to the art of music-making energizes those around me, creating an environment where creativity knows no bounds. Beyond just motivating, I excel at synthesizing diverse elements of a project, pulling strings together to craft a coherent and compelling musical narrative. This ability is born from years of daily dedication, where I’ve learned to see the bigger picture while ensuring each detail contributes effectively. My whole life has been a masterclass in music, allowing me to guide projects to their fullest potential with a vision that’s both inclusive and inspiring.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: What I bring to a song is the distilled essence of over 35 years immersed in the art of music-making. Each note is infused with authenticity, a reflection of a life dedicated to understanding the intricate dance of rhythm and melody. My work is a testament to the love I have for music—a love that translates into a palpable vibe and feeling that elevates every track. At the core of my process is a keen sense of the emotional heartbeat of a song, allowing me to nurture it into its fullest expression. With every project, I aim to ensure that the genuineness of the art form is not just preserved but celebrated.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: My approach to production is akin to a voyage into the unknown, where each session starts with a clean slate and the thrill of possibility. I thrive on the unexpected, finding that a fresh start each time allows for genuine creativity and innovation. Whether I’m diving deep into the essence of a track to unearth its core purpose or swiftly building around a vocal snippet, beat, or compelling chord progression, versatility is my hallmark. I have a knack for rapid creation without sacrificing quality, adapting to the pace that each project demands. Writing to imagery is another facet of my creative process that I particularly enjoy. It’s a practice that allows me to infuse music with a sense of narrative and drama, perfect for scoring or crafting soundscapes for media. No matter the starting point, I endeavor to build layers of sound that culminate in a track that is not only polished but also profoundly resonant. This dynamic and fluid process ensures that the music not only sounds good but also carries an emotional impact.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: My studio strikes a balance between the tactile expressiveness of classic synthesizers and the versatility of digital production. The Moog One, a true jewel in the crown of synthesizers, stands as the centerpiece of my collection. Alongside it, the Hydrasynth and various Elektron machines provide a rich palette of sonic textures to draw from. For vocals, the Wunder Audio CM7 reigns supreme, a faithful nod to the legendary vintage mics, beloved for its warmth and character. This mic not only captures every nuance of a performance but also adds a timeless quality to the sound. The digital side of my studio is robust, stocked with an extensive library of plugins that offer endless creative possibilities. Working 'in the box' has become second nature to me, affording the ability to craft music without constraints, no matter where inspiration strikes. Proudly endorsed by Universal Audio, I've woven their analog emulation plugins into the very fabric of my workflow. Their commitment to sonic fidelity mirrors my own. I'm a self-confessed gear geek, constantly integrating the latest and greatest advancements in music technology to ensure that my productions stay on the cutting edge. It’s about harnessing the best of both worlds—the analog and the digital—to create a sound that's undeniably unique and authentically mine.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Music, in its endless evolution, is a wellspring of inspiration for me. While my roots are firmly planted in the vibrant realms of hip-hop and electronic dance music, I'm continually energized by the ever-shifting landscape of new music that blossoms within these genres. Keeping a finger on the pulse of the latest beats and productions fuels my creative fire and informs my work. When it comes to individual inspirations, it’s challenging to single out names from the multitude of talents that influence me. However, iconic figures like Vangelis, with his pioneering electronic symphonies, Prince, whose genius crossed all musical and performative boundaries, and Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, who were instrumental in the genesis of hip-hop, have all left an indelible mark on my artistic psyche. Their groundbreaking work pushes me to explore and innovate, ensuring that my own productions carry a sense of timelessness and originality.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: The heart of my work lies in the creative partnership with artists and brands to bring their sonic vision to life. As a seasoned music producer and songwriter, I specialize in co-writing and producing music across a spectrum of genres. This collaborative process is tailored to capture each artist's unique sound and message, ensuring every track has the potential to resonate deeply with their audience. Alongside artists, I craft bespoke compositions for advertising, where the art of storytelling through music is condensed into powerful moments. These pieces are designed to amplify a brand’s message and create an emotional connection with their audience. Whether we’re shaping an album, single, or the perfect sound for a commercial, my focus is always on weaving a narrative that speaks volumes, no matter the medium.
