Interview with Tonino Speciale (Temmpo)
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I have recently enjoyed doing custom production music for Synch. This is quite new to me and found it both challenging and rewarding. As im writing, singing and producing the entire record. Its pushed me creatively in ways that are new to me and ive enjoyed very much.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Im currently working on various toplines/songs for various DJ's. I also working on my own 3 artist project's. Recently i have also been producing pop dance songs for various production libraries and Synch in the US.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Yes, I know a great singer female singer FWA. She's got an amazing voice and is super professional.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: This is hard. I love both. I love the warmth of analog. Ive recorded albums straight to tape machines and i really does give the reocrds charachter. However i do love the efficiency of digital. Digital plugins and technology in general has really caught up with the sound of analog. Most producers can tell the difference between Emulators. Maybe slowly leaning more towards digital. :)
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise to give 100% on your project. I am an experienced professional and will give my expertise on whatever we work on together. I can not wait to help bring your vision to life.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: i love that i get to create everyday and follow my passion. i consider myself blessed to do this for a living. I love that its different every day which keeps it fresh. I still love performing very much. I also love bringing ideas to life. Especially knowing that in some cases they didnt exsist hours ago. I also peoples reaction to the music ive created too. Music trully does bring people together.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Most of the time its about splits or percentages. Any writing, Singing, Producing ill be requiring a % as these works have to go through my proper publishing and Managment channels. Each % will vary depending on whats needed.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That i only do EDM music. Some people assume that the only thing i do because of my success in that field. But im open to work on anything in any genre.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Depends on the job. References are a must !! Do you have any lyric topics/messages you like? Which topics do you absolutley NOT like ? Same with production jobs or vocal jobs. Knowing what styles you like or dont like would help me alot. :)
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: I know that every project varies and will be in various states of completion however i'd appreciate customers who know exactly what they are after. Or as close to it as possible. As there is a million artistic possibilites , reference songs/vibes/performances that youre imagining would be ideal to at least put us in the right world to start off with and would allow me better to bring your vision to life in a productive manner for us both.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: An acoustic guitar, A great mic, universal audio apollo twin, A laptop, a midi keyboard. Thats all i need to create.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started singing at age 7, As a teenager i got into a music scholarship with a very sort after music academy in Sydney Australia. I graduated from this program and this led to my first publishing deal in London UK. I worked for a indie label as an in-house producer working with various rock bands and artists. I moved to London a few years after that and signed my second publishing deal. I had my own studio at Tileyard studios were i was based for 7 years. working with many of the worlds best songwriters and artists. Ive performed at many shows across the globe. I recently sung at Tommorowland and Ultra Music festivals with Afrojack. Loads of fun and a great experience.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Very eclectic, but always emotional, commercial and uplifting. I love to writer powerful songs with a strong message wrapped in a feel-good simplistic idea that can be accessable by many.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I love Kygo and Lost Frequencies in the EDM world, as i think they are doing the knda of music that perfectly compliments what i do. Commercial emotional singer-songwriter with an Electronic twist. In the pop world i think Taylor Swift is amazing and a very talented Songwriter as well as Ed Sheran.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Tuning drums has been useful to me and made ahuge different to the sonics when played in big sound systems. Theres no right or wrong in music, most of it comes down to taste. But I would also say after you've gotten the track/song to where your're ready to send it out. I usually take a step back from the creative process and analise it more critically. This usually means i remove certains sounds and tracks that are not required, as many as i can in fact. If i can live without it, then it usually means, it didnt belong in the track to begin with. Simplicity is Key !!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Mostly POP. all aspects and Genre's of pop. Its always different. I've had alot of success in the EDM world. Although i never started there. Alot of my songs became hits for Dj's. I've produced everything from Punk Albums, to Rnb girl groups, Singer-songwriters and everythign in between. I love that its different everyday.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Communication, Always being able to keep the creative sparks in the room flowing and having the discipline to know when to add or sit back in a session. Because im an all-rounder i can jump in to any role to get the song over the line and becasue of my vast experience i usually make the right creative decision when others are stuck.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Id have to say Experience. I worked with so many artists in so many different styles that i have a great understanding of what specifically makes genres anb best to cross/blend genres for something fresh. Being a singer in exceptioonal at melodies and english being my native language im quite confindent in lyrics too. Ive won many songwriting awards and compitions for my work.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Most often than not, i do a little research on sonic landscapes, style of writing needed to better accompanyg the project im working on. If im custom writing/producing, i tend to produce the track first, with a rough sketch of how the topline will sit. then when the track is at around 80% ill work on the topline, record it and then add or subtract from there to make the topline shine if its a pop song. I also do a lot of in-person sessions around the world with various artists and attend many songwriting camps.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I've recorded at Abbey Road, Tileyard Studios, Rak Studios Metropolis in London aswell as Studios 301 in Syndey Australia and Capitol records studios in LA and Ocean Studios in Norway. I currently have a Home studio, fully treated acoustically by a pro. I've used A7's and Genelecs 8010's for over 15 years and i know them inside out and are perfectlty porpotioned for my room size. Usually mix in the box unless i need to use bigger recording studios, which i still do from time to time depending on the project. Upright piano, hummingbird acoustic, fender Bass and strat. Dj decks and arturia samplers Korg triton Le. Aston Spirit mic, Sm57
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I love all-rounders. Im a huge fan of Mark Ronson, Finneas, Joel Little, Jack Antonoff. I love the legends of the edm world too, David guetta, Afrojack, Armin van Burren, Tiesto. These guys have been at the forefront of electronic music for a very long time, which is inspiring. The up and comers like Lost Frequencies i find very inspiring too.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Mostly a mix of songwriting, (im signed to Armada as a writer) vocalling/featuring and various kinds of music production in general. I also do alot of vocal production on records i didnt write. Recently i have also been producing customised commercial pop songs for TV and synch.Thats alot of fun and different for me.
