Interview with Tyler Porterfield

  1. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  2. A: My studio is a cozy, acoustically treated space designed for creativity and clarity. The centerpiece of my setup is the Slate Raven console, which has seriously streamlined my workflow and made the production process more intuitive and hands-on. I work primarily in-the-box with a carefully curated set of plugins, but I also have access to high-end instruments like vintage guitars, mandolin, bass, and synths that I use regularly in sessions. It’s a humble but powerful setup and perfect for capturing the intimate, layered indie sound I specialize in.

  3. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  4. A: I'm deeply inspired by artists who’ve embraced a DIY approach and built rich, emotive worlds from home studios. Elliott Smith is a major influence. Not just for his songwriting, but for how he captured raw, intimate performances with minimal gear and maximum feeling. I also look up to Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) for how he layered textures in isolation and created a signature sound outside of traditional studio spaces. Mac DeMarco and Tame Impala (Kevin Parker) have also been huge for me. Both proved that you can write, perform, and produce entire records yourself while maintaining a distinct, authentic voice. That kind of hands-on process inspires how I work with clients: finding magic in imperfections, and making something meaningful even without big studio setups.

  5. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  6. A: The most common type of work I do for clients is collaborative song development—helping artists bring their ideas to life through vocals, songwriting support, and full indie-style production. Whether it’s adding lead or backing vocals, fleshing out a rough demo, or producing a track from scratch, I focus on creating an authentic, emotionally resonant sound that fits the artist’s vision. Most of my clients come to me for indie rock or indie folk tracks, and I often contribute guitar, mandolin, bass, or synth as needed to complete the vibe.
