Interview with Denisse Takes

  1. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  2. A: I've worked on everything from folk music, rock, alternative rock, punk, world, hip hop to chill, eclectic songs and EDM.

  3. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  4. A: I feel I bring a unique lyrical perspective and vocal tone to the music I work on. Although it's fun to work on catchy melodies nothing brings more joy to me than delivering powerful, thought provoking content. I thrive when I'm able to work outside of the box.

  5. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  6. A: I consider myself very effective when it comes to writing lyrics.

  7. Q: What's your typical work process?

  8. A: My process changes depending on the song. It's a chicken or the egg scenario. If I'm provided the music the lyrics and melody come together pretty quickly. If I really dig the music everything comes together lightning fast.

  9. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  10. A: I have a fairly small setup as I work from home. My mic of choice is an Electro Voice RE20. It captures my warm tones beautifully. Besides that I use a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2, Traktion Waveform & Audacity, my Macbook Pro, a guitar and a Roli Seaboard Block & LightPad. My walls are prepped with Auralex acoustic foam and moving blankets. So far my clients have been happy with the results.

  11. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  12. A: I started writing and composing music at around 15/16 years old. Back then I was constantly inspired by mostly female songwriters - Fiona Apple, Jewel, The Cranberries, Mazzy Star and Lauryn Hill to name a few. They've been a tremendous influence in my music. Now that I'm older I try to limit my exposure to other artists to avoid drawing too much inspiration from them. But I have a deep admiration for Radiohead, Tobe Nwigwe, Rage Against the Machine, Ana Tijoux and Little Simz.

  13. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  14. A: Clients most often hire me as a top line writer.
