Aashray Harishankar on SoundBetter

I am a film composer, music producer, and keyboardist and have worked in projects for theater, dance, film, animation, and music. I am also experienced in sound design, mixing, arranging, and live sound. Above all, I am a sound artist, and pride myself on creating a high quality and emotive soundscape for each project I'm on.

I am a composer with a background in Carnatic (Indian classical) music and jazz piano. I like branching out on my musical abilities and inspirations and have written and collaborated on music in many genres, namely funk, jazz, alternative, film, orchestral, electronic, rock, string quartet, dance, r&b, blues, pop, theater, reggae, and others. In the business of musical creation, it helps to have many influences and learn how different types of musical forms and styles convey similar messages or portray different cultures and come to represent different memories to each of us. This reflects in projects where I collaborate with people of other disciplines as well.

Had a really great experience working with him. He helped me design the music for a meditation space I am creating and the final result came out so well. I really like that he took the time to listen attentively to the ideas and needs of the project and to connect with the intention of what was needed. Excited to work with him again for future projects!

Aashray is not only a gifted composer, producer and pianist, he is an incredibly talented and versatile artist. I’ve worked with Aashray on productions and live performances and he always goes above and beyond adding his expertise to enhance the vision. He is also very kind and patient which I believe goes a long way in this industry.

Interview with Aashray Harishankar

  1. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  2. A: I currently work off of an iMac with 32GB of RAM and processing power for large projects. I also have a MacBook for optimal portability with my projects, but mainly work out of my home studio where I own a pair of Yamaha HS7 speakers and have both my keyboards--a Korg M50 and a ROLI Seaboard--both of which I use to perform quite often. I use Logic Pro X, Ableton Live, and Pro Tools to fill out a full production on songs, and can adjust to any DAW for production.

  3. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  4. A: I am mainly a composer and producer, creating music and sound for use in media and collaborating with other artists to produce their work. I also work as an audio post engineer, editing and mixing sound for film, podcasts, trailers, etc.

  5. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  6. A: I take pride in my ability to see the heart of emotion in a piece of music and bring a wide variety of influences that will help it standout musically

  7. Q: What's your typical work process?

  8. A: I am all about organization, and so the easier it is to read and look at, the easier it is to work with. I generally begin with the essentials of a song and build from there, but with each collaboration and project it is often different, and I don't necessarily go off of any templates (for better or worse).

  9. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  10. A: I am inspired by the work Brian Eno has done in ambient music, as well as with artists such as Coldplay. Another figure I look up to is Quincy Jones, who has been the man behind so many of the artists we listen to and helped them mature as musicians and artists, producing a lot of great stuff himself as well. I love many genres of music, and am inspired recently by the work of Kevin Parker of Tame Impala and Jacob Collier for their ability to produce everything themselves.
