Doug recently mixed two tracks for me and I couldn't be happier with them. He understood my vision for the songs and brought them to life in a way that exceeded my expectation — full, bright, vibrant, epic. Not only that, but the dude's super kind and supportive. Would gladly work with him again and highly recommend!

Interview with Doug Clarke

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Engineering and mixing Matt McGuire (The Chainsmokers) and Josh Dun (Twenty One Pilots) in Studio One At EastWest. Two drum kits... over 40 mics... It was really fun to collaborate with Matt and Josh and mixing an insane 15 minute drum cover

  3. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  4. A: When it comes to engineering, I deliver air-tight tracks every time. I want who ever is producing or mixing to have everything they need to finish the song. On the mixing front i'm someone who will continue your vision for your songs.

  5. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  6. A: Usually rate and how many revisions. More than 95% of the time the mix is done by mix 3. Mix 1 for the general vibe. Mix 2 is broader notes, with Mix 3 being the final tweaks

  7. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  8. A: Who are your favorite artists? I want them to tell me what they love about them, what excites them, what inspires them. I want to understand the artists who have influenced them and contributed to their own creative journey.

  9. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  10. A: My studio set up is for mixing and recording vocals and overdubs. I'm mixing on an ATC SCM25 + Subwoofer pro 12c system, with Yamaha NS-10's, Auratone 5c's, and Audeze LCD-x headphones. And recording with a Neumann u87 and Shure SM7b

  11. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  12. A: Since moving to LA in 2020, I’ve been able to connect with an entirely new pool of incredible artists at the top of the industry. I can’t yet share what’s next, but I’ve been loving this new chapter of my career.

  13. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  14. A: Check out XX, YY or ZZ. They’re doing some cutting edge work.

  15. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  16. A: Both. The artists I work with tend to produce more nuanced tracks, which gives me space to pull the best out of both analog engineering with digital mixing. It is literally the best of both words. With so many tools at our disposal, why should we have to choose?

  17. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  18. A: Collaborating with brilliant artists is hands down the best part of my job. I’ve always felt a deep appreciation for our craft, so bringing songs to life alongside industry-leading musicians is very special to me.

  19. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  20. A: People who aren’t familiar with mixing and engineering might not view it as an artistic process. Although my job is rooted in technical skills, mixing and engineering requires musical taste and a deeply artistic touch.

  21. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  22. A: Find an engineer and mixer with an authentic appreciation for your sound. And someone who knows how to trust and artists/producers production and direction.

  23. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  24. A: I can’t live without my ATC's.....The trinnov ST2 is close 2nd. My Audeze LCD-x's are 3rd, Melodyne and Vocalign Pro for the vocal production and my U87!

  25. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  26. A: I’ve worked in this field for almost 10 years. Starting in Brisbane Australia and relocation to Sydney in 2015 and now working in Los Angeles at the beginning of 2020. My career has also taken lots of little steps along the way, doing live sound and also post-production.

  27. Q: How would you describe your style?

  28. A: I gravitate toward alternative/pop projects. But within that I love enhanced production and elevating performances to a hyper-realistic level... without sounding sterile and fake

  29. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  30. A: Dua Lipa. The mixing and production on the last record was amazing.

  31. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  32. A: Use less tracks (everything will sound bigger!) and be willing to take big risks, move quickly, and fully commit to your ideas. Being intentional and passionate in everything you do leaves more room for creative freedom! Also... always check phase...

  33. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  34. A: I usually work in Pop, Rock, and Electronic music.

  35. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  36. A: I’m an excellent communicator. I genuinely love connecting with artists and their team, and in turn, we have a mutually fun, creative and productive experience.

  37. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  38. A: I bring a critical blend of technical expertise and artistry. Fusing these two aspects of my skill set is what allows me to tap into the mind of a musician and engineer exactly what they hope to create.

  39. Q: What's your typical work process?

  40. A: With mixing, I collaborate closely with my artists. This usually start with the rough mix, understanding what makes that special and highlighting all the key elements in my mix. Then referencing mastered tracks with similar production/sound to achieve the desired outcome.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: For mixing Serban Ghenea and Josh Gudwin. Both have worked on some of my favourite records of the past decade, with Josh working for Kuk Harrell who is an incredibly inspiriting Vocal Producer.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I split my time between Mixing and Engineering. At my studio mostly mixing and vocal production, and then visiting other studios like The Village to engineer with G Flip
