Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I've only recently joined SoundBetter in May 2020, but have just worked with a vocalist named Kate Morgan who is an insanely talented singer/songwriter. We made a fantastic track together that I think has some big potential to be a hit!
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Creativity. As long as I can be creative, I'm happy
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Do you have any reference tracks you would like me to get inspiration from? Or any track that you really like the mixdown of, that you would like me to try and emulate?
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Laptop, Speakers, Audio Interface, Golf Clubs, Pillow.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Over 8 years. Early on I started by making unofficial remixes, getting featured and shared on some YouTube and Soundcloud channels. Then I turned my focus to original productions, and have had several releases on Hardwell's label Revealed Recordings, as well as had my music played by some of the world's biggest DJs including Nicky Romero and Mike Williams.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Chords and melodies are the key for me. I want the music to evoke sort of emotion in the listener, whether that is a happy or sad emotion can vary on every track, but I prefer uplifting music.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: There are so many. Gryffin is probably my favourite artist at the moment, but that changes regularly.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Don't underestimate the importance of choosing the right samples, particularly with drums.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Usually EDM, in particular Progressive House, or any style of house that can incorporate a good melody. More recently I've been producing a lot of Pop music, with lots of guitars and disco vibes.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My creativity, and my sound design skills have developed massively over the past two years or so. I'm now at a stage where I can create exactly what I have in my head, and write more advanced chords.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: A professional production with attention to detail, a great ear for melody, and excellent sound design and mixing skills.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Always start with the chords and melody. Once these are worked out, I focus on a more specific vibe to try and create with the choice of synths, and build a track from there.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Relatively simple - I have two Yamaha HS7s connect to a Scarlett 2i2 audio interface. I use an ASUS ROG laptop with custom specs to be able to handle the crazy amount of plugins I usually end up using!
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Max Martin, NOTD, Ian Kirkpatrick, Ellis, Martin Garrix, Axwell. I love when producers focus on the tiny details in their tracks, it really adds so much to the end result
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Most of my work involves producing and mixing. I typically will be given pre-written songs and will be asked to create a finished production around it, tailored to their vision. The other type of work is to be given a reference track and asked to create a production with a similar vibe, prior to a vocal being written.
